Bishop/Bishoprick

BishopOne that watches or that looks after; a guardian or protector.

God used this word 5 times in Scripture: 4 times to the Body of Christ in the Gospel of Grace (Romans thru Philemon); And once to Israel’s Little Flock in their tribulation book of I Peter.

There is one instance of “Bishoprick” in Scripture (Acts 1:15-26).  This instance describes the office of apostle that was vacated by the death of Judas Iscariot; after the death of Jesus Christ, the apostles provided oversight and guardianship of Israel’s Little Flock Church.

The title of bishop did not exist until the writings in Koine Greek.  Prior to the Koine Greek, they were referred to as Shepherds.  Because God distinctly used the word Shepherd in Israel’s Koine Greek Old Testament (Matthew thru John), the word bishop does not appear therein.

Today the word bishop has been hijacked by Christianity, with the meaning being changed by them to “A high-ranking member of the Christian clergy having authority, variously, over other clergy and usually supervising a diocese or church district”.  The LDS Church, defines Bishop as “A lay church officer who presides over a ward”.
