God used this word 347 times in Scripture: 225 times to Israel in their Masoretic Text Old Testament; 59 times to Israel in their Koine Greek Old Testament (Matthew thru John); 5 times to Israel in the transition book of Acts; 9 times to the Body of Christ in the transition book of Acts; 35 times to the Body of Christ in the Gospel of Grace (Romans thru Philemon); and 14 times to Israel’s Little Flock in their tribulation books (Hebrews thru Revelation).
In Scripture, the greatest majority of uses are in the first sense, “To deliver from some danger, rescue from peril, or bring to safety”. But God used the second sense quite a bit, “With the exception of or unless”.
The literary scholars have deemed that the second sense is archaic, “With the exception of, or unless”, but its usage is still common today.
In the 1200s CE, the Catholic Church (Christianity) introduced “To deliver from sin or its consequences; Admit to eternal life; Gain salvation” to the definition. It has become an integral part of their sales pitch today.
