Beelzebub

BeelzebubThe name of the god of Ekron.

God used this word 4 times in Scripture, with every occurrence being in Israel’s Koine Greek Old Testament books of Matthew and Luke.

In Israel’s corrupt Jewish religion, Beelzebub is the name of “the prince of the devils”.  While in fact it is the Koine Greek form of Baal-Zebub, the name of the god of Ekron.  According to Scripture, the prince of the devils is Satan.

“Baal-Zebub,” is identified in II Kings 1:2-16 by God as “the god of Ekron”, wherein King Ahaziah provoked the wrath of God by consulting him during his illness.  These 4 instances of “Baal-Zebub” are the only occurrences in Scripture.

Baal is the god worshipped in many ancient Middle Eastern communities, especially among the Canaanites, who considered him a fertility deity and one of the most important gods in the pantheon.  According to the Septuagint and Josephus, Zebub means “flies”.  They say that the name means the “Lord of Flies”, or “the god who dispelled flies”.

Flies being symbolic of plagues and illness, Israel’s corrupt religious system, Judaism, rejected God and accused Jesus of working for this Philistine god when He healed the sick.
