Accursed

Accursed – (adj) Abominable, detestable; Damnable or blameworthy.

This word appears 20 in Scripture: 16 times to Israel in their Masoretic Text Old Testament; and 4 times to the Body of Christ in the Gospel of Grace (Romans thru Philemon).

Accursed is NOT the past-participle of curse; the past participle of curse is cursed.

In 7 of the 16 usages in Israel Masoretic Text Old Testament are in the 2nd sense; damnable or blameworthy.  The other 9 usages are in the 1st sense; the abominable and detestable ‘thing’.

The term “accursed thing” (abominable and detestable thing) only occurs in the book of Joshua, and is talking about anything and everything within the city of Jericho, because God told them that He had determined everything therein accursed; an abomination, and thereby detestable.

In the taking of any “accursed thing” (abominable and detestable thing) by one person, it caused all of Israel to become responsible; accursed (damnable and blameworthy).

The list of accursed things in Joshua 7:21 were taken by Achan.  The gold, silver, and garment were not accursed in-and-of themselves, they were accursed because everything in that city was pre-determined by God as accursed.

The 4 usages in the Gospel of Grace are of the 2nd sense; damnable or blameworthy.

In the late 1300s, the Catholic Church invented their doctrine of “Excommunication”.  In so doing, they redefined the word “accursed” to mean “To excommunicate; Consign someone to destruction with a curse”.  To accomplish their redefinition, they changed this adj. into a verb.  Also, in support of their new doctrine, they had to redefine the word “curse”.

The word that they should have used to support their false doctrine is Eschew, but then they would have had no excuse for redefining other words.

The secondary issue with their newly invented doctrine is that, according to their new definition, “their preachers” are endowed with the power of God to condemn people to hell.
